Dr. Volker Scheid

Who Is He? Volker Scheid is one of Europe's leading physicians and researchers in the field of East Asian medicine. He has practiced acupuncture and herbal medicine in the UK since 1984. He is a Fellow of the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM), a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and a registered practitioner of natural medicine (Heilpraktiker) in Germany. He holds a PhD degree in medical anthropology from the University of Cambridge as well as postgraduate certificates from the Universities of Chinese Medicine in Beijing and Shanghai. In 2006, he was awarded a visiting professorship at the Zhejiang University of Chinese Medicine in Hangzhou (China). |
In the course of his training Dr. Scheid was able to study with several renowned Chinese physicians who guided his understanding of Chinese medicine to greater depth. He is closely associated with the Menghe current in Chinese medicine, an influential medical lineage that emphasises mild and gentle treatment. He has also studied Japanese Kampo medicine from which he take an emphasis on direct observation and experience. As a researcher Dr. Scheid has published widely on the history and development of Chinese medicine in the late imperial and modern eras, as well as on clinical issues. He is the author of three books: Chinese Medicine in Contemporary China: Plurality and Synthesis, Currents of Tradition in Chinese Medicine, 1626-2006, and Chinese Herbal Medicine: Formulas & Strategies, 2nd edition.
